Understanding and Successfully Treating Back Pain
Back pain is one of the most common health complaints in Germany – an estimated one in two adults experiences it at least once a year. Despite its prevalence, it is often underestimated or incorrectly treated. Early and targeted action is crucial to prevent an acute problem from becoming a chronic condition.
Common Causes of Back Pain
The causes of back pain are varied. Most commonly, muscular tension arising from prolonged sitting, one-sided strain, or lack of movement is responsible. Degenerative changes in the spine – such as herniated discs, facet joint arthritis, or spinal stenosis – can also lead to persistent pain.
Less frequently, structural conditions such as scoliosis, osteoporosis, or inflammatory rheumatic diseases (e.g., ankylosing spondylitis) are the cause. A precise diagnosis by an orthopaedic specialist is therefore essential to initiate the correct therapy.
Modern Treatment Approaches
At our orthopaedic practices in Düsseldorf, we rely on individualised, multimodal treatment concepts. Depending on the cause and severity, the following therapies may be used:
- Physiotherapy and targeted exercises to strengthen the core muscles
- Manual therapy and osteopathy for functional blockages
- Injection therapy (e.g., facet joint injections, epidural injections) for nerve-related pain
- Shockwave therapy for chronic muscle tension and tendon insertion complaints
- Minimally invasive procedures for herniated discs or spinal stenosis
When Should You See a Doctor?
Acute back pain often improves on its own within a few days. However, if the symptoms persist for more than two weeks, worsen, or are accompanied by numbness, tingling, or loss of strength in the legs, you should consult an orthopaedic specialist promptly. Pain that increases at night or is accompanied by general symptoms also requires prompt evaluation.
